Our annual Western WA APRS Winter Gathering took place last Saturday,
March 18 and was the biggest ever! At the beginning of this Gathering, I
had to change the name to INTERNATIONAL APRS/Digital Winter Gathering! We
had five people drive down from Canada to attend this one day event! The
rest of the attendance was 4 from Oregon, 1 from Alaska, 1 from Colorado,
1 from California and 35 from Washington.
A total of 47 people signed the roster. I think we probably had a few
more that did not sign in. I just could not believe such a large turn
out. It was more than double the maximum number that I would have ever
What did we do right? Well, I asked that question! It was the fact that
we did not limit this gathering to just APRS. This was officially an
APRS/Digital Gathering! We opened the topics to anything relating to
Digital Ham Radio. That spelled success for everyone.
We had three distinctively different groups represented. Our normal APRS
Group, those interested in Digital Communications which included the
Wet-Net Group and the State ARES/RACES Organization including Ed N7NVP our
WA RACES Officer. Each gave their agenda, explained what they were doing
and planning to do and each was hoping to attract the other groups in
supporting their efforts. After all, this was an excellent mix since we
really are all working in the same direction but are working sort of
I asked if they would be interested in doing it that way again next March
and the answer was an overwhelming YES! I think we all left this
APRS/Digital Gathering in good spirits and we all felt that we passed our
message to each of the other factions and will have a good continuing
working relationship in the Digital World of Ham Radio and how it is,
and should be used to support Emergency Communications!
Bill WA7NWP also announced a new Yahoo Group on WA DIGITAL EMERGENCY
COMMUNICATIONS. Those interested in Digital Emergency Communications in
Washington should sign up for this mailing list. You can check it out and
sign up at:
Those not living in WA might want to sign up too, just to see what we are
doing and maybe you can also make some posts that will head us in the
right direction. Emergency Communications does not have any boundaries.
It goes beyond County, State and National boundaries.
Those attending also expressed their desire to have the Power Point
presentations posted on the web so that they could view them and/or
download them for reference and to show to their local groups. We will
make that happen on Bill's WA7NWP Wiki Page (hi Bill). Actually Bill has
already begun setting this up and will announce the URL once we get it all
the information posted on that page.
Kim already sent the complete roster to all those who signed it so now we
all have each other's email addresses in case questions arise. Kim is
also working on a WEB based survey for those who attended so we can try to
make next year's event even better.
I would like to thank Kim AC7YY for spearheading this year's gathering. I
thought he went way overboard with the planning and renting such a large
hall, but he proved to me that if you will make it more interesting, more
people will come and they sure did! Kim even provided lunch for everyone
attended and that was included in the nominal $5 donation at the door.
Thanks Kim and Steve WB7VAS (our greeter at the door and Cook) for a job
Don't forget to mark your calendar for our Summer Gathering in North Bend,
WA on Sept 8, 9 & 10. This is a camp-out Gathering at the Valley Camp in
North Bend and is open to everyone who would like to attend. Bring your
entire family to join us for this camp-out. Day trippers are also
welcome. Maybe this year we will have to expand the scope to also include
the entire spectrum of Digital Communications.
Once again, thanks to all who helped make this event a huge success,
NW APRS Group, West Sound Coordinator
