The current routing table is around 300k routes, and it the current router memory size required is about 512Mb.  This is a big concern for carriers because memory for a Cisco GSR or a CRS-1 is *VASTLY* more expensive than your typical chunk of PC memory.

And you would consider that not every user would want to run BGP.  Remember that 800k hams each with a route in the table would be larger than the entire Internet routing table is today.

For most ham's purposes, a PC with a couple of gigs of memory would probably do just fine.
